montelukast is a selective antagonist of the leukotriene receptors acting specifically on the cysteinyl leukotriene receptors and is active when orally administered.
prophylaxis and treatment of chronic asthma in children older than 12 months and in adults. Treatment of asthmatic patients sensible to acetylsalicylic acid and prevention of bronchial spasm induced by exercise. Relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms in adults and children older than 2 years old.
Dosage and Administration Mode
- Children from 12 months to 2 years old with asthma: 4 mg once a day.
- Children from 2 to 5 years old with asthma and/or seasonal allergic rhinitis: one 4 mg chewable tablet a day, before going to bed.
- Children from 6 to 14 years old with asthma and/or seasonal allergic rhinitis: one 5 mg chewable tablet a day, before going to bed.
- Older than 15 years old and adults with asthma and/or seasonal allergic rhinitis: one 10 mg tablet a day, before going to bed.
The effects of montelukast on asthma are observed in the course of the first 24 hours. It may be taken with or without food; no dose adjustment is necessary in children, elderly, patients with renal insufficiency or mild to moderate hepatic failure, nor according to sex of patient. Montelukast may be associated to other antiasthmatic treatments and its dose may be reduced (bronchodilators or inhalation corticoids) if improvement of general symptoms is observed.
